Using Drones in Facility Inspection

Most of the times, when we hear of drones, we either imagine they're usage in military or for photography but their functionality can be useful in many places. For instance, the unmanned aerial vehicles are now starting to become a common sight for facility inspection at many places.Mostly, it is the oil and gas facilities which are now using the inspection drones to keep track of everything and ensuring that things are working fine.

Inspection Drones in Oil & Gas Facilities

To further and better understand the role of unmanned aerial vehicles, we can take a look at all the tasks that are performed. It goes without saying that in both of these facilities transportation or even processing comes with certain risks.

  • One small mistake can mean the leakage which can lead to environmental damage easily. In fact, even the lives of human workforce working on site are at risk with everything involved. Therefore, it is better to have regular and frequent inspections to maintain everything under control.
  • Furthermore, the on-site inspection can be taken over by drones rather than sending over people. Eventually, it will improve the overall analysis and results through inspection and help in overcoming potential threats.
  • With help of inspection drones, the facilities can quickly figure out the problem spot. If there is a damage that needs to be solved, the inspection drone will certainly lead to the spot without missing a moment.
  • The oil and gas facilities are quite large in size which hinders the inspection as well. It is not possible to cover the entire area through ground inspection. The unmanned aerial vehicles are changing this by allowing you to sit back while they inspect large oil and gas facilities.

  • While there are many benefits of using the inspection drones for facility management, we cannot overlook their cost-effectiveness. You can save the cost from potential damage as well as insurance if you use drones for inspection.

There are merely a few benefits which have been assumed since the use of inspection drones has become common. However, these are not all. Indirectly, inspection drones can help your oil or gas business through better customer relationships. Your employees will feel safer at work and similarly, more people will want to work with your company. Therefore, undermining inspection drones is simply not possible anymore.

Many startups are already providing inspection drones that will be controlled by professional pilots so that facilities including the oil and gas will be able to manage things with optimal care. A famous name to have already used the inspection drones is Shell which used Dragon Flyer X6 at the Mars platform. This cost almost $250,000 to the company. This is just one example and many companies are improving drone technology to be able to offer premium drones to these facilities.

In short, unmanned aerial vehicles will definitely take over these immensely stressful tasks for the protection of environment and safety of the workers on site. By the end of 2022, inspection drones will have more work than humans.
